A Distinct Stromal-Cell Platform Built for Translation
Decidua-derived Stromal Cells (DSC) are the foundation of Decinova’s proprietary therapeutic platform.
Originating from the human decidua, DSC were developed from research into a tissue with a unique biological role in regulating immune interactions at the maternal–fetal interface. Over more than 15 years, this scientific foundation has been translated into a cell-therapy platform encompassing cell isolation, expansion, characterization, cryopreservation, preclinical evaluation, manufacturing development and clinical experience.
The Biological Rationale
An Immunological Environment Unlike Any Other
During pregnancy, the decidua exists at one of the most complex immunological interfaces in human biology. It contributes to an environment in which extensive immune regulation must occur while maintaining tissue integrity and function.
Decinova’s DSC platform emerged from the hypothesis that stromal cells originating from this environment may possess immunoregulatory characteristics relevant to severe immune-mediated disorders.
Research on DSC has identified multiple immunomodulatory mechanisms, including pathways involving PD-L1/PD-L2, IDO and prostaglandin E2, among other cell–cell and soluble-factor interactions.
These mechanisms provide the biological rationale for continued therapeutic development of DSC in severe inflammatory and immune-mediated disease.
Differentiation
Not All Stromal Cells Are Biologically Equivalent
Stromal-cell products are frequently grouped together despite substantial differences in tissue origin, cell biology, manufacturing and functional properties. DSC originate from decidual tissue rather than conventional bone-marrow, adipose or umbilical-cord stromal-cell sources.
The Decinova development program has therefore focused on understanding DSC as a distinct therapeutic platform rather than assuming equivalence with conventional MSC products. Differentiation is evaluated across:
